This is too real. Love how your words connect with my latest essay on language and competition. Also, the recent Iowa/LSU rematch and that SC/LSU fight made me think about the racial double standard for women’s athletes. It’s much more common that Black women will be viewed as thugs for expressing their competitive spirit compared to white women. Thank you for guiding me toward more consideration.

Completely agree on the racial double standard, Alex!! I had a conversation last night with a client that started by my saying Angel Reese is the better draft pick (IMO) than Caitlin Clark. My client said "no way, she's a drama queen" and we started to debate whether or not Caitlin Clark could also be defined as the same. First of all, neither should be defined this way simply because they are showing emotion during high-stakes games (something we both touched on in our pieces) but second of all, after commenting on Reese's nails and eyelashes, it was obvious to me why he felt the way he did.

I think it's incredible that I am debating a man in a sports bar over women's sports, because what a step to have been made! But it shows how the deep rooted stereotypes infiltrate everything, despite the progress that's been made.
